When they first told me I’d get to embed with a team of architects building a structure out of tin cans for South Coast Plaza’s Festival of Children, I hoped we’d be creating something that might elicit wonderment in the eyes of little boys like me - something like, say, a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. I was assigned to help build an 8-foot tall Hello Kitty.

Hello Kitty has come to life at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, CA thanks to Dougherty + Dougherty Architects, LLP who constructed the fabulous feline out of 6800 cans of food (mostly tuna!). The giant sculpture titled ‘Hello Kitty, Goodbye Hunger’ depicts Hello Kitty sitting in a field with her picnic basket.

Have you Junkies seen this yet? Dougherty + Dougherty Architects LLP made “Hello Kitty, Goodbye Hunger” out of 6,800 cans! 4,400 white tuna cans and 1,500 pink tuna cans… Picnic basket was made from organic applesauce cups… Kitty’s bow was made from Emergen-C Vitamin C packets!
