Located in East Oakland, this 1964 Child Development Center was in need of significant upgrading.  Keeping the majority of the existing structure intact, the design breathes new life into an existing dilapidated building.  New butterfly roofs bring natural light and ventilation into all of the classrooms.  The floor plan creates a new, dynamic entry experience and expands the three classrooms out to meet the play yard.  The new site design provides a comfortable indoor/outdoor entry space along with water efficient landscaping, natural storm water controls, and a variety of opportunities for the children to explore and engage nature, including a teaching garden.  A new staff meeting room provides space for training, presentations, and group meetings.  The CHPS Certified design includes an Energy Management System for centralized building system controls at the District Office.  Upgraded building systems provide state of the art electrical and data capabilities, including connections for future photovoltaic panels.  Efficient plumbing fixtures greatly reduce water use and the natural ventilation eliminates the need for any building cooling.  Building systems automation includes heating system / operable window interlocks to ensure that heat isn’t wasted and lighting daylight sensors.  Within an efficient budget, this modernization and expansion will turn an aging facility into a community asset.
